I don’t know how to say this…

But sometimes we do unexplainable things for the sake of love.

Yes, for the sake of love we forget about respect. I don’t know how to put this in a manner where you would most understand because I, myself can’t even grasp the very meaning of it. I’ve searched for answers believe me, I’ve gone through all words and have decoded riddles but I found nothing. I kept going on because glimpse of pieces of hope and bits of reasons were casted in front of me.

Maybe there are no reasons or explanations just like what it was in the book Looking for Alaska. Maybe we just keep our mouths shut sometimes because we are too tired to reveal ourselves in the open. Maybe someday these instances will disclose themselves naturally.

Up Dharma Down’s Sana Dalawa ng Puso Ko Cover

Last Night was really jampacked at Saguijo… it felt like sugarfree’s last gig there. The highlight of the night was when Armi and the boys Ean, Pol, and Los covered the song Sana dalawa ang puso ko to pay tribute to the songwriter Bodjie Dasig who just passed away.  It was really good and you should listen to it bec they mixed it up with their song Sana.

Here’s the video taken by Bel Certeza

Random thoughts…

  • RIP Karl Roy. I can’t exactly put to words how I felt when I heard the news yesterday morning, a few hours after he passed away. It was really heartbreaking, but I’m glad up to his last breath he didn’t quit performing on stage, and that’s how he proved how much he loved music. He lived for it, and he will be remembered through it.
  • Goodnight Meiday. Well I had to miss the last Meiday because it’s my finals week, and I hate myself for choosing to side with my Superego that night. Well to those who had been in any of the Meiday concerts wouldn’t ask me why I had to spill my emotions over its ending. Meiday has been a huge part of any bands’ life, especially the indie bands. Meiday is the type of event where all you have to do is bring yourself and party hard, and it’s partying with your favorite local indie bands playing for you. It’s an eternal heartbreak that it’s ending since it became a home to local bands. Everytime there is Meiday and I see thousands of people coming, I feel relieved because it proves to me how much people still appreciate and support our local bands.
  • Thesis. Jesus, I want to get over this thesis shet. I’m just glad we did a great job with it. Our teacher said our work is really good and that they can have it published. Thank heavens.
  • I really hate how Myx Music Awards depends on text/internet votes alone. The focus should be QUALITY MUSIC, and not number of fans. Kaya ang daming sumusubok na di magagaling eh, binibigyan niyo ng award kasi ang daming bumoto, akala tuloy nila magaling sila.
  • Ely Buendia on Rock Ed Radio. I was at the Rock Ed Radio to help Tita Gang with the twitter questions, and damn that guy has a lot of fans. I even had to donate a whole chapter of my Rizal reading for the questions and requests (we used the back page just to be clear). He’s really amazing! and Chris Padilla of course.
  • Up Dharma Down. This band just turned 8 years old! Gaaaaahd I miss them and also Mayee and Bel but we’re going to see each other on the 17th yay!!! Well I just miss the times when they would still come unnoticed and few people just know them. I remember when I was in 2nd year and my friend Mervin transferred to Diliman, we had our first UDD gig at this channel V thing in UP, and people would scream for 6 cycle mind, Sandwich etc… and then when UDD came up on stage, it was just the two of us who sang along to their songs and screamed at the top of our lungs when we saw Armi revealing herself from the backstage. I am not complaining because I’m not happy with the success they have right now, they’re my friends and I know how much this gives them joy, I just miss those times. I don’t want them to become so overrated, I want them to be the same as before, underrated but never failed to shock people with their performance. My love for UDD is very sacred, maybe that’s the reason why I’m not too comfortable exposing them to a lot of people.
  • Erik Matti. A lot of people berated him for his statement regarding Cinemalaya, that it should not be reformed, but should be taken out. If you read his statement, he has a point, he said there that Cinemalaya treated filmmakers like charity, and they don’t give too much importance to the films.
  • MNL 143. Director Emerson Reyes needs our help to finish this movie. This will be good I am sure, Reyes still picked Paule and Viado for the lead roles. click this link if you want to donate funding for the film http://artisteconnect.com/projects/mnl-143. and here is the 30 second trailer of the film
  • I should’ve enrolled for Comm Arts or Film and not Psych. Me and my stupid decisions.
  • I should visit art exhibits again after this thesis. I remember I ahd to miss Nikita Dancel’s exhibit for our thesis, and I told this to her and she said she also hated thesis way back in college. I promised her I will attend to her next exhibit no matter what.
  • Our Baguio plans has been sitting here for a month now.
  • Crush ko talaga si Raya Martin okay. Period.
  • Excited for Marie Jamora and Raya’s films

On Cinemalaya…

Cinemalaya recently disqualified Emerson Reyes’ entry “MNL 143″ mainly because of casting disagreements. Reyes wanted to cast Joy Viado and Allan Paule in lead roles but the Cinemalaya committee disagreed saying that the choice of characters is “not suitable to the material”.

When I first heard this issue about Cinemalaya, I felt ashamed because if this is the case, then Cinemalaya is not different from the mainstream producers anymore and this frightens me. I believe Cinemalaya’s purpose is to help filmmakers put to film their visions, support their creative ideas through the grant given to the chosen entries, and to give them the freedom to create their own films but in this scenario, obviously Cinemalaya did not serve its purpose well.

This issue is something important to me since I am a huge fan of independent films and I have high respects for Cinemalaya and the people behind it, but in this case I felt frustrated. The reason behind the disqualification is something I can’t understand because I think it’s like questioning the talent of the actor and actress chosen. In an article by Marinel Cruz, it was stated there that Cinemalaya’s monitoring head Robbie Tan wanted to cast Victor Neri and Francine Prieto as the lead roles in the film MNL 143, which I think is very much “not suitable to the material”. In the first place, MNL 143 is a comedy film so I don’t think that Francine Prieto would act better than Joy Viado in a comedy role because Viado is a comedienne herself and Prieto is a sexy star. On the other hand, Victor Neri would also be the least actor I would cast on a comedy role because he is a serious action star to begin with. In another article I read, Robbie Tan specifically said “Pag may romance angle, at least, kahit papaano, importante yung chemistry nung dalawang artista.”. Okay let us go to the romance angle of the film, and yes the characters should have chemistry and connection as proofs that there is a love between them but I think the film wanted to cover an older version of romance and not the Sarah Geronimo-Gerald Anderson type of romance so I believe the chemistry part would be not so important anymore. Let us put it this way, in Anghelito, a program in ABS-CBN, Snooky Serna and Al Tantay played as the mother and father of the lead female role, and I didn’t see the chemistry there because actually viewers don’t care when it’s about older people’s love affair, all we care about really is how we would feel the love between them and this can be shown through their acting. I think Joy Viado and Allan Paule would do great, and chemistry is nothing if the acting is bad. I believe the directors should have the main authority to cast whoever they think is suitable to the role because it’s their film, and Cinemalaya’s role should be just to facilitate and monitor. I also felt disappointed because Cinemalaya is the only institution here which helps these filmmakers produce creative and great films with their own views and rule but it seemed like Cinemalaya’s goal now is just to sell-out.

I believed so much in Cinemalaya because I thought they mainly value the talent of filmmakers, and their creativity to make extra-ordinary films. I thought Cinemalaya, just like the independent filmmakers joining the contest, is not profit motivated. I thought their main goal is to produce good films first before anything else. I’d like to believe that somehow they would go back to their senses and be what we expected them to be because they’re the only hope of these filmmakers.

“Isa Lang ang Pangalan”

Feb 24, 2012

As a teacher.

Rebecca Añonuevo was my Philippine Literature professor when I was in 2nd year. I can still clearly remember the way she spoke in class, it was always with conviction.

At first, I thought she was this strict and ill-tempered kind of teacher but she’s not, rather she’s that kind of teacher whom you can see passion burning in her eyes and in her words. I remember one time she asked us if we read the story she gave us, and we were all frightened to say no because she might get mad, and then she said “hinde?” and was followed by a loud laugh. She was just like that, she will never give you an FA if you overused your free cuts, but will definitely scold you if you don’t put your heart in what you’re doing. The most important lesson I learned from her was to carefully explore the different sides of a story  before arriving to a conclusion.

As a poet.

Her very first poems I read was Bago ang Babae and Ang Hinahanap ko sa Lalaki, and from there I was captivated by her words. I bought her book Kalahati at Umpisa (which she told me yesterday that it was purely love poems) 2 years ago and I fell in love with the way she writes. Now her 6th collection of poems “Isa Lang ang Pangalan” is already available in bookstores, and I can tell you it’s a must-read.
